19th Century Wood and Metal Pawnbroker's Trade Sign

Traditional 19th century wood and metal pawnbroker's trade sign comprised of three wooden spheres suspended from metal stems to a bar or piece of hardware. The sign is extended from a conical flange that is stamped "Made in USA." The sign would have hung upside down outside a shop window to advertise second hand merchandise.

The pawnbroker's symbol dates back to its use in medieval Europe, where pawn shop banking originated. A trio of golden spheres would have hung in front of merchant's houses, perhaps originally resembling or representing coins. It is sometimes attributed to the Medici family of Florence, Italy, as it was also adopted into their family crest.
