Antique Mounted French Brass Shield "IIII" (Roman Numeral 4)

Description:

19th C. French brass shield with a Roman Numeral cut out.  Most of the backs of these has a piece of metal at the base of the cutout and at the top of the cutout.  It appears that something translucent could be placed there and a candle or light source placed behind it.  Not all of these have the tracks.  Unsure of the original use of these.  Each has been mounted on a black rod which attaches to a black metal base.

Condition:  Nice patina on the brass.  The upper right corner of the shield has what appears to be residue of some type of "burn".  The base is black painted metal and has some scuffs/scratches.
